[BCL2 binding component 3] The protein is one of the BH3-only proteins with a single BH3 domain and no other BCL2 homology domains. BBC3 is the approved gene symbol for PUMA [p53 upregulated modulator of apoptosis]. A databank synonym is JFY1.
BBC3 is a strong promoter of cell death by apoptosis. Its expression increases in response to exposure to DNA-damaging agents and expression of the tumor suppressor gene p53, which mediates DNA damage induced apoptosis.
