BCLwav is a highly divergent pro-apoptotic protein related to BCL2. Its expression is restricted to aquatic anamniotes (fish and frogs) (Prudent et al, 2013). The protein is involved in the control of blastomere convergence and extension movements during gastrulation.
Prudent et al (2014) have shown that, in zebrafish, Nrz counteracts the pro-apoptotic activity of BCLwav. Nrz decreases BCLwav dependent embryo mortality and prevents apoptosis induced by BCLwav ectopic expression in the embryo's head and tail.
