[brain Ig-like molecule with tyrosine-based activation motif; brain immunoglobulin-like molecule with TAMs] This protein has been identified by Sano et al (1997) as a brain-specific glycoprotein in the rat brain. It postnatally increases and is rich in the mature brain. BIT is a major endogenous substrate of brain tyrosine kinases in vitro. Cerebral cortical neurons can extend their neurites on BIT-coated substrate and anti-BIT monoclonal antibody specifically inhibit the effect. A comparison of cDNA sequences cloned by Sano et al (1997) and Saginario et al (1998) shows that BIT is identical with MFR [macrophage fusion receptor].
