a general term for a large number of diverse substances produced by bacteria which can selectively induce the synthesis of both pro-inflammatory and immunomodulatory/anti-inflammatory cytokines and are used to subvert host responses directed against the infecting organism. More general terms are Microkine or Modulins (this entry contains a brief list of factors having an entry in COPE).
