abbr. CASP3. This enzyme is a member of a family of evolutionarily conserved cysteine protease proteins known as caspases. Many of these enzymes are part of a proteolytic cascade that plays a central role in cell death by apoptosis. It is known also as PARP cleavage protease, CPP32, YAMA, apopain, LICE, and SCA-1. The enzyme is one of the initiators in processes leading to cell death by apoptosis.
