This term collectively refers to the different discrete successive stages that can be discerned in mitotically active eukaryotic cells (Cross et al, 1989; Hanley-Hide, 1992; Kirschner, 1992). The well-organized sequence of events yields two identical daughter cells. Factors causing cells to proliferate are said to act as a mitogen or to be mitogenic, and the process itself is called mitogenesis.
