A glycoprotein of 25 kDa glycoprotein (121 amino acids) purified from fetal bovine cartilage by virtue of its ability to bind to heparin (see also: HBGF, heparin binding growth factors). The mature human protein consists of 120 amino acids and is coded as the C-terminal part of a larger transmembrane precursor. The protein is known also as SCGP (small cartilage-derived glycoprotein) (Neame et al, 1990).
Chondromodulin is expressed specifically in cartilage. Chondromodulin markedly stimulates DNA synthesis of cultured growth-plate chondrocytes in the presence of bFGF. Chondromodulin has been renamed Chondromodulin-1 (abbr. ChM-1
