[chondrocyte, chondrocyte-derived]
Chondrocytes are derived from from cranial neural crest cells of ectodermal and mesodermal origin. The precursors from which chondrocytes develop are chondroblasts (for progenitor cells see also: chondrogenic progenitor cells). Both cell types are collectively being referred to as cartilage cells. For a cell type showing features of chondrocytes and fibroblasts see also: fibrochondrocytes.
