[Differentiation-retarding factor] A factor initially isolated from BRL cells (Buffalo rat liver) that inhibits the differentiation of embryonic stem cells (see also: ES cells) and embryonic carcinoma cells (Koopman and Cotton, 1984; Smith and Hooper, 1987). The factor is identical with LIF.
