ELMER

[Endogenous Ligand conferring MitogEnic Response] A biochemically uncharacterized factor isolated from sera obtained before delivery from women with preeclampsia. ELMER is an acid- and heat-labile protein of approximately 160 kDa. It is a potent mitogen for human fibroblasts but not for human endothelial cells.

ELMER may be a potential serum marker of preeclampsia; it may play roles also in the vasospasm and proliferative vascular lesion, termed atherosis, frequently associated with the preeclamptic syndrome (Taylor et al, 1990).
