[Fetal bovine heart endothelial] The FBHE cell line is used in bioassays to study the growth-promoting effects of heparin binding growth factors (see also: HBGF). The cells do not proliferate even in serum-containing media unless a source of fibroblast growth factors is made available. These cells are used, therefore, to assay aFGF and bFGF. Various polysulphated derivatives of the glucan laminarin inhibit bFGF binding and the bFGFstimulated proliferation of FBHE cells. l-Carrageenan, a polysulphated carbohydrate that antagonises some heparin binding growth factors, also inhibits bFGFdependent proliferation of FBHE cells
