bioassays

Assays in which concentrations of biologically active factors are quantitated either in absolute terms or in relation to a standard by the magnitude of a biological effect that these factors have in sensitive isolated cells and sometimes also in tissues, or organisms.

Bioassays exploit the many different biological activities of cytokines and measure, for example, cell proliferation induced by cytokines, Chemotaxis, cytotoxicity, capacity to induce colony formation (see also: Colony formation assay, Limiting dilution analysis), cellular degranulation, or the induction of secretion of further cytokines or other compounds.
