[high mobility group protein-1] HMG-1, (approved gene symbol: HMGB1 [high mobility group box-1]), belongs to the family of so-called high mobility group of nonhistone chromosomal proteins with a molecular weight approximately 25 kDa. It is a highly conserved and ubiquitous structural protein of chromatin that binds linear DNA, bends double-stranded DNA, interacts with various histone proteins, and acts as facilitators in the assembly of nucleoprotein complexes (Thomas and Travers, 2001; Paull et al, 1993). HMG-1 shields DNA adducts against repair enzymes making cells more sensitive to cisplatin therapy. The 5' region of the TNF-beta
