abbr. HAPO. Hemangiopoietin is encoded by the PRG-4 gene (proteoglycan-4) and has been described under various other names, including megakaryocyte stimulating factor (see: MSF), SZP (superficial zone protein), and lubricin. Hemangiopoietin has been shown to be an alternative splicing variant lacking exon 5 of PRG-4 (Liu et al, 2004).
This factor is considered a growth factor acting on hemangioblasts. Recombinant hemangiopoietin has been shown to significantly stimulate the proliferation and hematopoietic and/or endothelial differentiation of human bone marrow
