This octadecapeptide (DNRMVNHFVQEFKRKHKK; Asp-Asn-Arg-Met-Val-Asn-His-Phe-Val-Gln-Glu-Phe-Lys-Arg-Lys-His-Lys-Lys), derived from the heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) of rice (Oryza sativa L. japonica), is a cationic alpha-helical antimicrobial peptide active against the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis and the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans. The peptide has little or no hemolytic activity even at 1mM, and shows negligible cytotoxicity up to 300 μM. Hsp70(241-258) appears to exhibit antimicrobial activity through membrane disruption (Taniguchi et al, 2013).
