Hyperplasia is a normal and regulated physiological response to demands placed on a tissue. It is characterised by increased numbers of a particular cell type of differentiated cells, which is caused by higher and regulated cell proliferation rates in response to appropriate signals. Cells in hyperplastic tissues are being referred to as hyperplastic cells. The cells and also the tissue in which hyperplasia is observed look normal upon microscopic inspection (compare also: Dysplasia).
