A general term for a family of small, activation-inducible, mainly chemotactic (see also: Chemotaxis) and pro-inflammatory proteins. This family of structurally related proteins has been renamed Chemokines. The intercrine-alpha family corresponds to Alpha-Chemokines (CXC-Chemokines). The intercrine-beta family is known now as Beta-Chemokines or CC-Chemokines.
For a new systematic nomenclature based on distinctive sequence features see: Chemokines, SCY family of cytokines.
