abbr. IAP (a term with multiple meanings). Intracisternal A particles are retrovirus-like repetitive DNA elements (Aota et al, 1987), known also as retrotransposons, that are reiterated approximately 1000-fold and widely dispersed in the genome of mice and hamsters. They possess a retrovirus-like LTR region (long-terminal repeat) that functions as a promoter. Large variations in sequence and length have been observed among individually cloned Intracisternal A particles LTRs. These can be used to distinguish individual elements.
