Katacalcin is a peptide (DMSSDLERDHRPHVSMPQNAN) encoded within the human calcitonin gene where it is located adjacent to the calcitonin sequence. It has been described originally as PDN-21 (an acronym from P = peptide, D (aminoterminal residue), N (carboxyterminal residue) and 21 = length of the peptide) as a plasma calcium-lowering peptide (MacIntyre et al, 1982). The peptide is being referred to also as CCAP [carboxyl-terminal adjacent peptide] as it lies at the C-terminal end of the preprocalcitonin gene (Jabobs et al, 1981; Craig et al, 1982).
