[mammalian CED3 homolog-3] MCH3 encodes a protein that belongs to a class of cysteine proteases known as caspases. The protein shows a high degree of homology to CPP32 (53 % identity). The gene has been cloned by Fernandes-Alnemri et al (1995) from a human Jurkat T-cell cDNA library, who also identified two splice variants MCH3-alpha (303 amino acids), and MCH3-beta (253 amino acids). MCH3-beta lacks the active site of the enzyme and may act as a dominant inhibitor for MCH3-alpha.
