MGI

[macrophage-granulocyte inducer] This is an older acronym denoting several colony stimulating factors (see also: CSF). They were identified initially as activities supporting the growth of hematopoietic colonies in a colony formation assay (see also: hematopoiesis) (Landau and Sachs, 1971; Lotem et al, 1980). The specificity, i.e., the predominant cell type within colonies supported by MGIs, is indicated by a suffix:

MGI-1G: specific for granulocytes (see: G-CSF) (Sachs et al, 1989);

MGI-1GM: specific for granulocytes and macrophages (see: GM-CSF) (Sachs et al, 1989);
