Mactinin is a 31 kDa aminoterminal bioactive fragment (see also: cryptides) generated by proteolytic digestion of the 100 kDa actin-binding protein alpha-actinin. Mactinin promotes the maturation of monocytes and macrophages. This fragment is produced in vitro and in vivo by urokinase (uPA) (Luikart et al, 2002). Mactinin has significant chemotactic activity for monocytes and is present in several types of inflammatory arthritis where it might modulate mononuclear phagocyte response to inflammation (Luikart et al, 2002). Luikart et al (2006) have reported that impaired wound healing in knock-out mice lacking expression of urokinase can be restored by administration of mactinin.
