abbr. MBN. The protein has been identified originally in the human leukemia cell line HL-60 cells (Bories et al, 1989). It is present in the azurophil granules of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes from which it is translocated to the cell surface during activation (Csernok et al, 1994).
The enzyme is overexpressed in myeloid leukemia cells (Dengler et al, 1995) and in CFU-GM of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (Molldrem et al, 1997). The enzyme can be secreted or expressed on the cell membrane. The extent to which the enzyme is expressed on the membrane seems to be genetically determined (Schreiber et al, 2003)
