Myxinidin (GIHDILKYGKPS) is an antimicrobial peptide isolated from the acidic epidermal mucus extract of hagfish (Myxine glutinosa L.) (Subramanian et al, 2009). It is active against a broad range of bacteria and yeast pathogens (Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium C610, Escherichia coli D31, Aeromonas salmonicida A449, Yersinia ruckeri 96-4, and Listonella anguillarum, Staphylococcus epidermis, Candida albicans) at low concentrations. Myxinidin is more active than pleurocidin. The peptide does not show hemolytic activity against mammalian red blood cells.
Structure-activity relationships and the derivation of myxinidin variants with improved antimicrobial activities have been described by Cantisani et al (2013).
