Necdin
abbr. NDN. The cDNA encoding this nuclear protein of 325 amino acids has been isolated by Maruyama et al (1991). The protein induces neuronal differentiation of stem cells and is expressed by differentiated neurons early in embryonic development (Aizawa et al, 1992).
Necdin governs the permanent arrest of cell growth of postmitotic neurons during development of the nervous systems of vertebrates (Hayashi et al, 1995; Uetsuki et al, 1996). Takazaki et al (2002) have reported that necdin is involved in the terminal differentiation and survival of NGF dependent dorsal root ganglion neurons and that necdin deficient nascent neurons
