[terminally differentiated cell, terminal differentiation, terminally differentiated]
This term (abbr. often TD cells) essentially pertains to the majority of all somatic cells (body cells) that, during their development from a fertilized egg, have undergone a complex regulated series of steps and, with the acquisition of specialized functions, have reached the endpoint of their development, which distinguishes different cell types with different specialised functions. As all somatic cells have the same genome, differences in the type of specialisation are attributable to cell- or tissue-specific differences in the molecular mechanisms that govern and maintain different differentiation programmes, which themselves are caused by differences gene expression
