[neurotrophic factor]
abbr. NTFs. also: neuronotrophic factors. A general term for growth factors and cytokines occurring naturally in the nervous system that can enhance neuronal maintenance, act as survival factors, support axonal growth and/or may also regulate synaptic development and plasticity in the nervous system (see also: neuropoietins). According to the neurotrophic factor concept, innervated tissues produce a signal (guidance cues) for the innervating neurons for the selective limitation of neuronal death occurring during development (Korsching, 1993).
