[procollagen 1 C-terminal peptide] This bioactive peptide fragment (see also: cryptides), called also C3 (Hojima et al, 1985), is the COOH-terminal fragment of procollagen type 1. It is produced in tissues with high synthesis of collagen type-1, such as in breast cancer stroma and in bone and is generated by BMP1 (procollagen C-proteinase) during physiological processing of collagen type-1 (Hojima et al, 1985). High levels of PICP are found in the sera of breast cancer patients and are associated with poor prognosis (Jukkola et al, 1997; Kauppila et al, 1998) The peptide has been shown to act as a chemoattractant for breast carcinoma.
