[proopiomelanocortin] POMC (also: pro-ACTH-Endorphin, proopiocortin; abbr. POC) is a glycosylated 31 kDa protein precursor posttranslational processing of which yields several neuroactive peptides upon specific cleavage and possibly a great number of as yet unidentified small peptides that may be pharmacologically active. POMC is expressed in the pituitary by two cell types, corticotropic cells and melanotropic cells (collectively referred to as POMC cells).
