[POMC cell]
POMC, the precursor of a variety of bioactive hormone peptides including ACTH, beta-Endorophin, and alpha-MSH, is expressed by two cell types in the pituitary. If not specified further the term may refer either to corticotropic cells or melanotropic cells.
Allen et al (1995) have generated transgenic mice expressing a fusion gene composed of the pituitary expression-specific promoter region of the POMC gene, driving the herpes simplex viral-1 thymidine kinase to study cell ablation of cells expressing POMC. Adult mice
