Proline racemase A |
TIGIRR-1 |
||
This protein is encoded by the pathogenic human parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The enzyme is a co-factor-independent proline racemase that catalyzes the interconversion of L- and D-proline enantiomers (Chamond et al, 2003). It is expressed in a life-stage specific manner. The enzyme is intracellular in replicative non-infective forms of T. cruzi. Membrane-bound and secreted forms are present upon differentiation of the parasite into non-dividing infective forms.
The enzyme is a potent mitogen for B-cells in a mouse model of trypanosomiasis and causes the expansion of lymphocytes that are essentially nonspecific, which contributes to parasite evasion and persistence inside the host. The racemase active site is necessary for mitogenic activity (Reina-San-Martin et al, 2000).
