Approved gene symbol: PROS1. Protein S is a secreted vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxylated protein (called also Vitamin K-dependent protein S) that is synthesized mainly in the liver (Ploos van Amstel et al, 1988). Plasma contains a free, functionally active form, and an inactive form complexed with C4b-binding protein (Dahlback, 1991; Dahlback and Stenflo, 1981). The cDNA encoding human protein S has been cloned by Lundwall et al (1986) and Hoskins et al (1987).
