Pyrrhocoricin is an inducible antibacterial peptide (VDKGSYLPRPTPPRPIYNRN) from the sap-sucking insect Pyrrhocoris apterus (European red firebug or Linden bug; (Sap sucking bug, Cimex apterus)). It is a proline-rich peptide of 20 amino acids that shows high sequence similarities with drosocin (Cociancich et al, 1994). Pyrrhocoricin has as high in vitro efficacy against Gram-negative bacterial strains and is not toxic in vitro or in vivo in mice (Otvos et al, 2000; Kragol et al, 2002).
Pyrrhocoricin has been shown to bind to the 70 kDa bacterial heat shock protein DnaK and the 60 kDa chaperonin GroEL in Escherichia coli, which interferes with chaperone-assisted protein folding and ultimately kills
