These cells are ganglion cells (neurons) found in the gelatinous substance of Rolando (substantia gelatinosa) in the spinal cord (Beal and Fox, 1976; Lu and Perl, 2003). The spinal substantia gelatinosa is a major termination region for unmyelinated primary afferent nerve cell bundles that receive input from sensory nerve fibers.
