The murine monoclonal antibody S-Endo 1 (Bardin et al, 1996) recognizes an antigen expressed constitutively in all types of human endothelial cells. Bardin et al (1996) have shown that this antigen is identical with MUC18 described as a tumor marker in human melanoma. Low levels of this antigen are expressed on smooth muscle cells, stroma cells and follicular dendritic cells. The antigen is not expressed on hematopoietic cells. A secreted form of the antigen that is about 10 kDa smaller than cell-associated CD146 is found in the culture supernatant of human endothelial cells (Bardin et al, 1998).
