[spleen focus-forming virus] SFFV (Friend SFFV) is a replication-defective retrovirus that does not contain an oncogene. It causes acute erythroleukemia in mice. The virus also induces the Epo independent proliferation of cells and makes cells independent of Epo (see also: HCD57) (see also: Factor-dependent cell lines).
The viral gene product responsible for these effects is an envelope glycoprotein of 55 kDa (gp55) that functions as an analog of Epo in binding to and activating the Epo receptor. SFFV gp55 [Friend spleen focus-forming virus gp55
