[tumor upregulated CARD containing antagonist of caspase nine] This protein contains a CARD domain. It is identical with CARD8, CARDINAL, NDPP-1, Dacar, KIAA0955.
TUCAN has been identified by Pathan et al (2001). It is overexpressed in some types of cancer. In colon cancers high expression levels correlate with shoreter patient survival.
The protein homodimerizes and binds, through the CARD domain, to the zymogen (proform) of caspase-9, preventing its activation. TUCAN interferes with binding of APAF-1 to procaspase-9 and suppresses caspase activation induced by the APAF-1 activator, cytochrome C
