This is the name given by Neil et al (2008) to a protein shown to inhibit a wide range of viruses (Douglas et al, 2010; Jouvenet et al, 2009). This antiviral activity can be expressed constitutively or induced by IFN-alpha. The protein is identical with BST-2 [bone marrow stromal cell antigen-2]. In the nomenclature of CD antigens the designation is CD317.
The new name reflects the observation that virions remain attached to the surface. Mature virions readily escape from infected cells, however, because viral genomes may encode proteins counteracting Tetherin activity (for some examples see: Vpu encoded by Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1,
