[Virion-associated nuclear shuttling protein] This human protein has been identified by Gupta et al (2000). The protein binds to HIV1 matrix protein, which mediates active nuclear transport of pre-integration complexes required for the productive infection of nondividing cells.
VAN is highly conserved in vertebrates and expressed in most human tissues. Its expression is upregulated upon activation of CD4(+) T-cells. VAN is efficiently incorporated into HIV1 virions and shuttles between nucleus and cytoplasm. Overexpression of VAN significantly inhibits HIV1 replication in tissue culture. Sequence comparisons show that VAN is identical with ABIN-1.
