[Vaccinia virus B14R protein] This protein is encoded in the genome of Vaccinia virus. The protein has the same three-dimensional fold as BCL2 family proteins despite lacking identifiable sequence similarity but does not modulate cell death by apoptosis (Graham et al, 2008).
The protein promotes immune evasion and virulence. It is non-essential for virus replication in cell culture but contributes to virus virulence in vivo and affects the host response to infection (Chen and Smith, 2006).
Protein B14 binds to an endogenous inhibitor of the pro-inflammatory tanscription factor NF-kappa-B, IKK-beta and thereby reduces phosphorylation of I-kappa-B-alpha (Benfield et al, 2011).
