Visfatin
abbr. VF. This protein has been identified by Fukuhara et al (2005). It is highly enriched in the visceral fat of humans and mice and plasma levels increase during the development of obesity. Visfatin is identical with PBEF [pre B-cell colony enhancing factor], a cytokine expressed in lymphocytes. Sequence analysis and functional assays show that the protein is the extracellular form of the enzyme Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase. The protein has been identified independently as AURA94, augmented in rheumatoid arthritis 94], and Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase.
In vitro, Visfatin mimicks the effects of insulin. In vivo, it lowers
