abbr. VTG. This protein is the precursor of yolk proteins. In nonmammalian vertebrates, the embryonic development depends entirely on nutritional reserves derived from proteins. Mammals have evolved lactation and placentation, and vitellogenin genes (3 in chicken) have become pseudogenes during mammalian evolution [Brawand et al, 2008; Babin, 2008]. Apart from its function as an energy source, vitellogenin has been shown to play a role in innate immunity (reviewed by Zhang et al, 2011).
