A mouse pre-B-cell line established from BALB/c bone marrow cells. The cells express B220, Ly1 and Fc receptors and do not express cytoplasmic or surface immunoglobulins. Y16 cells depend on the presence of IL5 for survival and growth (see also: Factor-dependent cell lines) (Tominaga et al, 1989). Y16 cells constitutively express AIC2B (see: AIC2A), one of the components of the IL5 receptor (Takaki et al, 1991). The cells can be used in bioassays to detect murine IL5.
