[alarmin]
This term has been proposed by Bianchi (2007) as a general term for any kind of molecules (see also: molecular patterns) signaling tissue damage. See: DAMP [damage-associated molecular patterns]. Some of these entities may represent fragments of proteins with established and well known activities unrelated to alarmin functions. See also: Dual identity proteins and Cryptides MiniCOPE Dictionary.
Bessa et al (2014) have used the term nuclear alarmin to describe a danger signal, represented in their studies by IL33, that is primarily regulated by nuclear compartmentalization, with altered subcellular localization dramatically affecting immune homeostasis.
