[abnormal wing disk] The Drosophila melanogaster protein awd, encoded by gene CG2210, shows 78 % homology with mammalian nm23 and is considered the ortholog of nm23. awd has been shown to possess Nucleoside diphosphate kinase activity (Biggs et al, 1990; Lascu et al, 1992).
The disruption of awd function arrests cells in the metaphase. The protein is associated with the microtubules and plays a role in the polymerization of spindle fibers.
