This term pertains to a cell type found in the pituitary after surgical or drug-induced castration (Kovacs and Horvath, 1975; Nishizono et al, 1993; Kawaminami et al, 1998; Saeger, 1992) or long-term alcohol consumption (Somer et al, 1988).
Castration cells may have the morphology of signet ring cells or appear as giant hypertrophic cells. They are discriminated easily from other pituitary cells without immunostaining.
Castration cells have been confirmed to be hyperfunctioning gonadotropes, which transform into castration cells, for example, after gonadectomy, or treatment with anti-androgens, gonadotropin releasing hormone agonists or aminoglutethimide, i.e., in strongly hyperactive states (Saeger, 1992; Kovacs and Horvath, 1975).
