The term fibrochondrocytes has been introduced by Webber et al (1985) to describe cells found in the meniscus, the fibrocartilaginous tissue within the knee joint (see also: remarks in entry chondrocytes). Fibrochondrocytes, or often simply fibrocartilage cells, have features of chondrocytes and fibroblasts. Like chondrocytes, they have a rounded morphology and are protected by a territorial matrix. Like fibroblasts, the cells produce collagen-1.
