This plasma membrane glycoprotein of 60-70 kDa has been isolated by Wiesner et al (1990) from human diploid fibroblasts. Contactinhibin causes a reversible inhibition of growth when presented to sparsely seeded human fibroblasts in an immobilized form. This effect is seen also with other cell types, including Schwann cells (Casella et al, 2000), with the exception of transformed cells, which do not show the phenomenon of contact inhibition. Confluent cultures treated with antibodies raised against contactinhibin are released from the contact-dependent inhibition of growth. Such cells shown enhanced saturation density, a criss-cross growth pattern of cells
