The dermcidin gene (approved gene symbol: DCD) encodes a protein of 110 amino acids (designated also dermcidin-1L; abbr. DCD-1L). Preproteolysin is a databank synonym from a submitted sequence encoding Dermcidin.
Lowrie et al (2006) have reported that the product of the dermcidin gene is identical with PIF (proteolysis inducing factor) (see: Cancer cachectic factor) and that the dermcidin precursor also encodes the neuronal survival-promoting peptide Y-P30. Stable transfection of this protein into protects against oxidative stress and may function as an oncogene in hepatocytes
