This term has been coined by Tang et al (1998) to describe cell death by apoptosis in response to inappropriate interactions of cells with the extracellular matrix. The authors have described that certain kinds of polarized cells such as epithelial cells or endothelial cells, but not fibroblasts, die when forced to grow under conditions of collagen overlay.
